Wine has always come naturally to Terry. While his first introduction to wine was as a teen, sneaking Chardonnay from his mom’s cellar, he found that his passion was solidified while drinking wine by the litre as a backpacker in Europe. Upon arriving home from his travels, he decided to turn his passion for wine into a career.
Terry completed his sommelier training in Vancouver, and held positions in several of the city’s finest restaurants, including South Granville’s institution, West. Terry soon had the opportunity to move to London, to work with Richard Corrigan at Lindsay House. After that, Terry spent five years as Head Sommelier and Wine Buyer at Michelin-starred restaurant, Chez Bruce, where he oversaw the award winning 1,000-bin wine list and was credited with hiring and training one of the U.K.’s top sommelier teams. Under his leadership, Chez Bruce won a number of international awards, including ‘Overall U.K. Wine Establishment of the Year’ and ‘European Wine Restaurant of the Year’. Chez Bruce also won Decanter magazine’s ‘2007 Restaurant of the Year’ award and was recognized as having the U.K.’s Best Wine List by The Independent’s Food and Drink Awards 2010.
In 2011, Terry returned to Vancouver from London to join forces with Chef David Hawksworth in opening his celebrated restaurant, Hawksworth. As Wine Director at Hawksworth, Terry was afforded the freedom to design and implement a ground-breaking wine program that is now established as one of the most exciting in Canada. Drawing on his experience in Europe, Terry was the architect behind a unique program based on three key foundations: Top-level staff training, a constantly evolving list of exciting selections, and gracious approachable service adapted to the needs of each customer.
In 2012, Terry was named Sommelier of the Year by Vancouver Magazine, the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival and California’s Sunset Magazine, and he was also named one of the ‘Top Foodies Under 40’ by Western Living Magazine.
Terry has served as a judge in numerous local and international wine competitions. He was the first Canadian sommelier to become a regular panelist for Decanter Magazine, and he returns to London every year to judge the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge. Terry is proud to continue to act as Festival Sommelier for the Vancouver International Wine Festival, a role which he has held for 13 years. Terry is regularly called upon by numerous media outlets for his natural ability to demystify wine in a relaxed, yet sophisticated manner.
